Tried to keep our colors inside the lines
A coin had flipped. It was no longer tails – bitterly cold, starkly white, and mutedly quiet; winter – instead the head was up – springtide was in full swing. The sun shone like a bright orange disk high overhead to herald the time of day as noon. Shining with such brightness that to look up was to be dazzled into blindness and a couple of long minutes were necessary to blink away the dark, dancing spots, the sun brought with it not only light but balmy warmth. Hopeful blooms were bursting from the awakening soil that was no longer held captive by the freezing temperatures and with the tender new sprouts appearing so did the wildlife. They stiffly crept from their burrows or sang songs of great joy as their long migration came to an end or ravenously devoured the fresh sprigs and sipped from the lukewarm springs with great rapture after spending so long a winter scavenging the scarce pickings.

Among the peaceful bustle was an ivory and scarlet maiden with wings much like an avian. She was dashing first this way then that way with bubbles of laughter trailing after her when petals exploded from their stem because of her hurried motions. Though her pelt was surprisingly clean, with only smudges of the red soot from the Waste still staining her silken leg feathers, it wasn’t thick with health and was rather dull, lacking the luster of good nutrition. Her pelt failed to disguise the prominence of her ribs, which distinguished themselves like ridges lining a mountain range instead of gently sloping like the meadow she raced around. Her feminie profile was slightly more gaunt than usual since she lacked any temptation of food in the land of Lyrus. Even now her mind was far from the thought of caring for her body and was focused on nourishing her soul. With each playful buck and eager rear she felt more and more like herself.

Too thrilled to mind her footing, as she was immersed in a flurry of startled butterflies, she stumbles through a stream and nearly crashes to the bed of pebbles beneath. Water showers the air in a glittering sparkle of rain that soaks her legs, underbelly, and throat. Her thick flaxen tail, plait and all, get a thorough soaking as well and she flicks the heavy mass to try and balance. The pegasus catches herself on her front knees, earning green grass smudges and dirt smears, before scrambling to all four hooves and hollering with surprised delight at her successful catch. She stands unsteadily upon the other side of the gurgling stream and her ears flick forward and back when a doe eyes her warily then continues to graze, paying the equine no mind. Wrinkling her nose at the lack of response, she bolts forward to enjoy the thrill of the wind upon her face. Her skin itched because her coat was threatening to shed and her muscles ached as they remembered how swift she could be.

This was what her life was meant to be. Abundantly free.

Being mature was tough. For now, Benna would take a break. She had stepped outside of the Iron Valley and took a deep breath of the fresh spring air for the first time in what felt like an eternity. Although, it most certainly wasn't. After all, she was only four years of age.

Before, Benna had considered herself sophisticated and utterly mature. Now, she knew she most certainly wasn't. In some ways, the young dragon had grown up. But in other ways, Benna would always be a child. And that was perfectly alright. Adulting was overrated anyway.

She had a promise to keep, that was what lead her to the Gardens. Her little green companion, Dae, had come from the Gardens. She was a faerie, one who joined her after Heretic gave the fae to his followers. The little creature had stayed loyally by Benna's side, and the dragon had promised her companion she would bring her to the gardens to visit her kin. The very second they had set hoof amongst the flowers the small green fae darted off in search of its brethren.

Sid, on the other hand, simply groaned into Benna's ear. The garden snail had taken up position on the dragon's white ear - which hung at a lopsided angle with the added weight. She didn't care though, Sid could do whatever he wanted.

There was a flurry of movement, a pegasus moving at top speed before coming to a scrambled and sudden stop on her knees. Benna's eyes watched the skidding and before long was rushing to the mare's side with her own top speed.

Where the taller and much bulkier mare had stopped, Benna did not. She skipped, tripped and landed face first into the stream with a flurry of wings and golden jewels. She paid it no mind though, turning back to her hooves, dripping with water, and beamed at the other mare.

"That was. So. Fun!" She all but squealed, pale eyes glimmering with unhindered excitement. Those eyes then locked onto the other equine's wings. Feathered. They were feathered! Those of you who have seen young Benna grow up will know that feathered wings are a foreign thing to her.

Unlike last time, the dragon managed to restrain herself from diving straight at the soft feathers with the talons on the ends of her own bat-like wings.

"Wow, your wings are so beautiful. Can I touch them?" She stretched her nose out towards the interchanging shades of brown that made up the mare's wings, but paused and awaited an answer. Just because she was the Empress of the Heretics did not mean she could be rude. In fact, it would probably pay to be polite once in a while.

Gah, there it was. Responsibilities again. Yes, Benna had wanted the throne, and she had known the tasks that came with it. She had wanted to rule over the Heretics herself ever since Nightingale had been usurped. Before then, it had never been an idea in her mind. But in the years since, that itch had grown and grown until at last she had claimed the title herself. But even the Empress of chaos bringers needed time to unwind.

Tried to keep our colors inside the lines
At first she paid no mind to the sound of rapidly approaching hoof beats, coming from behind, since they could belong to anyone and their owner could go in any direction. The clumsy maiden had only gone four galloping strides before sorrel ears snapped backward at the sound of splashing. That was in the same path she had traveled! Was she being followed? The frothing and sloshing noise of water was much louder than her missteps and it had her slamming to a halt. Her shoulders were jarred by the impact and her haunches tucked low, hind legs sliding until her back hooves kissed the heels of her front hooves. Leaping around, by half-rearing on her hind limbs and lifting her front ones around, the alabaster mare marked with splotches of chestnut stood still as a frightened doe while she blinked at the stranger that had appeared.

When a radiant grin spread across the leathery winged mare’s face an answering, though more tentative, smile echoed on the feather winged damsel. Bright blue orbs broadcasted enthusiasm as they animatedly took in the sight of her, a youthful voice filling the air between them, and the shy filly-mare took the opportunity to return the favor and appraise the stranger. Her mismatched orbs noted four legs – unlike her six legged not-quite-friend – and an abundance of mane as well as a wealth of ivory tail. That was similar to her, even if both her mane and tail were the shade of pale flaxen. What grabbed her attention most firmly were the bangles. Golden and numerous, the rings encircled the stranger’s legs and smaller circles pierced her nose, ear, and wings. They were shiny and captivating, especially the adornment in her forelock. She was always looking to add more to her collection, which consisted of teal acacia beads that kept her braids intact.

She startled at the question. Unaware of her curious steps, the fae had drawn closer to the stranger to peer more closely at the jewelry. Despite their height difference, the pair appeared to be very similar in weight though their builds carried it differently. It took a moment for the less than bright mare to process the words since beautiful kept ringing the loudest. She watched intently as a pale pink nose reached toward her. The feathers ruffled and fluffed themselves as her nerves elevated. In a trill whisper she finally answered, "Y-yes?" The way her voice crept upward at the end made it sound as if she was actually questioning but she did enjoy touch whenever she could.

So long as they were nice touches. Suddenly overcome with shivers, the pinto quivered in place. Eyes wide enough to show a rim of white, she nibbled her lower lip before squeaking out, "C-can Alell t-touch yours?" Slowly arching her neck and reaching out with her pale whiskered nares in the direction of the sorrel hued wings, the foal-minded mare let her gaze skitter from the newcomer’s face to the beguiling glimmer of the golden rings.

"Where can Alell get some?" she breathlessly oohed and aahed the inquiry. It escaped her notice that her words might seem confusing if taken at face value since she already had wings. Why would she want a different type? But her question had actually been directed toward finding some of the golden ornaments. Alell was ever the treasure hunter for anything glittering, shiny, or colorful.
