VALKYR
the north

These lands were... different.

All lands were different, of course, yet here Valk found a certain charm that reminded her of the yawning caverns back home in the north. The stories that had been spun by warm hearthfires had always spoke of their origins, before the deities had touched down and granted them fire, had mingled among them. The only difference was this place was warm, allowing Valkyr to relax as she stepped even deeper inside, her ears flicking and her eyes wide and curious, the smile on her lips despite herself. It was warm, it was beautiful.

Stepping deeper in, the woman gave herself a shake, her mane and tail flicking and fluttering about as she flicked a rock with a single hoof, listening to the echo as it bounced in front of her, deeper inside. Yes, she missed home, but she was also extremely eager for places like this, to forge herself a new life, and perhaps in the future? Perhaps she would return home with many stories in an older age, visit and travel more than anything, and come back here. It sounded like a beautiful time to her, and perhaps a good future plan.

Valk smiled, before pausing and tilting her head to the side, ears flicking as she blinked. She was certain she had heard hoofsteps.

Edelweiss......
words : 288 || tag : Valkyr || notes : c:
The depths seemed somewhat fitting to entertain her darkening mindset, and they were perhaps the area of Elysium she had explored the least in her stay here thus far. They seemed to be a place where macabre lurked, and she'd heard rumour of the House of Mischief which operated within the caves. The premise of the operation just didn't seem morally right, and so far she'd stayed away from it for that precise reason. Now, though, boredom was driving the woman to do things she hadn't even considered entertaining before, and so down into The Depths she went.

Darkness encompassed the iridescent mare as she travelled further into the cavern's throat, and she had nothing to light her way. At least it was not pitch black, though, for her eyes slowly adjusted to the dim atmosphere enough that she could at least see where she was going. Somewhere in front of her she heard the echo of a faint 'tap'. Something hitting the rocks on either side of her, perhaps? Hooves seemed to follow, their hollow melodies fading as they receded into the cave until they stopped and the only sound was that of her own pace.

Strange.

Edelweiss could only assume someone had heard her approach, and so she continued on her way. Within a few minutes she came across a mare, easier to see thanks to the lighter colours of her coat, in particular her cream head and shoulders. Edel glanced back in the direction of the cave's mouth but realised with an exasperated sigh she would have to talk to the mare.

"Think I was sneaking up on you?" she slipped into some sort of sarcastic wit with a sneer on her lips.

VALKYR
the north

It as true then, she had heard steps. Gazing with golden eyes, her head tipped just a bare fraction as she turned, and within her line of sight, a mare came floating. The females here in the more southern lands always seemed more graceful, as if a bare breeze would blow them away somewhere, and also tended to come with a more odd view on life. A bit ditzy, some of them, that Valk had run in to. This one seemed to hold their ethereal beauty, as if she would simply fade away with bare steps that would hardly be heard.

So she was surprised when the mare spoke with such a sharp tongue, and rather than be put off, the smile only grew on her lips.

"Not at all." The thickness of her accent rolled from her tongue, and she merely smiled at the other, looking a bit amused. Her body adjusted on her hooves, and a soft breath fell from her nose, her ears flicking forward. A dainty seeming mare but this one reminded her of others in the north, with their sharp words and banter. It was a warm familiarity that had Valkyr at ease, rather than on her guard.

She was alert, yes, but that didn't mean she had to look as such.

"I suppose you hail from around these parts?"

Edelweiss......

God, she hoped against hope that this mare she'd stumbled into was not another of the boring sods she'd crossed so many times before. Edelweiss was never one to entertain idle, mundane conversation but in the lack of any real fun to be had she would happily settle for some sort of interesting topic of speech. Anything that did not follow the general idea of 'hey, isn't the weather great today?' would suit her just fine. She'd usually wait a little while before approaching a potential conversationalist, making sure they were interesting enough to warrant her attention, but here she had no choice but to respond with some kind of formality to the stranger, lest she leg it the other way and hope she never saw the woman again.

Much to the shining lady's surprise, the only response she received for the moment were three blunt words. A thick accent rolled across as she spoke and Edel found herself briefly contemplating where it might be that this woman was from. The stranger smiled at her and the antlered mare could only roll her eyes. Apparently the girl had a thick skin, which Edel assumed would grant her a little time to continue making her judgements on whether she deserved any attention.

She asked another question, accent as thick as before, and Edel wondered whether the rest of the conversation would proceed in this manner. Nonetheless, she entertained the enquiry and responded with a voice that was polite, if a little unamused. "In actual fact I do not. I travelled a little, found and then left another land before finding my way here. I've not stayed here for too long." she gave no details of Pantheon or her past life. This wasn't 'let's tell our entire past history' day. "I assume you are not, though I cannot place your accent." she didn't ask any direct questions but assumed the curiosity would find its way to the woman, anyway.

VALKYR

Ah, so she wasn't from around these lands either.. perhaps that explained the sharpness to her words, no matter how she attempted to disguise them to be polite. Valk knew those with sharper tongues, and she wondered if perhaps this one thought herself above all others. She'd get along well with the deities of her homelands, that much Valk knew, but many didn't know who was a deity and who wasn't. It was merely home, after all.

"My accent comes from Brynjar, though I do not expect many in the south to know of that." Many here merely called the lands 'The North' and she found it easier to say she was from there, rather than spill the name from her mouth and earn a very confused look.
"Many here will merely call it 'The North' but I hail from a large herd." Large, massive, one giant herd that lived among one another, passed stories and wore thick furs on top of themselves to brave the colds and see the beauty of the lands in the brief summer. It was a good life, or so she figured, but then again she had been raised there.

All the same, the mare rolled her shoulders just a little, allowing her muscles to relax and her golden eyes to focus on the other woman, curious, but not prying. Many in the south didn't believe there were herds up North, too dangerous they whispered as she passed them by. "I am Valkyr," she offered at last, though she expected no actual response from the other, or rather, no name.

The North.

Huh, well that was a wide expanse within which this 'Brynjar' could lie. Edelweiss would've scoffed, though something in the tone of her new companion was strangely comforting. Well, no, not comforting as such but rather suggestive of the fact that they were not far from kindred spirits. She had not run a mile at Edel's unprompted rudeness and that said something in itself. The pink and green mare refused to let her lack of knowledge of this place show, and merely nodded when the mare spoke her first sentence. When she explained it as The North, however, Edel decided to offer her two cents. "Huh. I've not met a Northern soul before - are you a rare breed?" the question was pointed but held a specific sarcasm which she had carefully considered. She assumed the woman would take it well, would understand the joke, and somewhat hoped her assumption had not been overshot and would hence backfire.

Oh, they were doing names now? Well fuck. Edelweiss had always despised her prissy name and despised her parents henceforth for giving her it. At least this stranger possessed some kind of a strong name, one fitting for her golden figure and chiselled features. Violet eyes stared into pale amber orbs as she sized up the mare not in competition but disguised jealousy, summoning the effort to roll her own title from her coiled tongue. "Edelweiss," she refrained from spitting the thing, thoughts spiralling in her head as to why she had not changed it at first chance. The answer to that was simple, though. She was known as Edelweiss where she initially reigned from, and changing the title that famed her would've been an insult to her herd and those she had fought with.

Pathetic as it was, the people of her past had come to speak her name as if it were a careful treasure. Edelweiss, the title of a lullaby and of dainty flora, had made legacy of the word and as much as she loathed it she was unwilling to let its honour go, so Edelweiss she remained.

VALKYR
the north

A brow arched at the question and she tipped her head just a slight bit, curious. Sarcasm was not lost on her, and instead a small smirk pulled against her dark lips, and she let out a soft sound, somewhat of a chuckle as her shoulders rolled and she exhaled. "Plenty would say we are," she retorted, taking it smoothly and replying with some of her own.

Her shoulders gave another roll before Valk flicked an ear to catch the name, finding it a rather strange and dainty thing. A name that fit the other perhaps in looks, but not in nature. The name and face collided in her mind, creating an odd amalgam that had her thoughts whirling, and she tried to brush it off instead. "Forgive me, but the name does not suit your nature. Perhaps your looks, but you are a woman of warrior quality, and the name... not so much," she spoke, her accent still heavy on her words as she took a step or two, mostly to do something with her legs and at the same time to move herself so she wasn't standing in the same place for too long.

A habit that came with living in the North and the creeping cold and ice. It was never good to stand still.

"But perhaps you southerners name differently. A name to match looks, not to grow in to." That made more sense, at least to her it did. The maiden smiled just somewhat, allowing herself to relax again, temporarily.

Edelweiss......

As idle time ticked by, the vixen was becoming more and more inclined to believe she was in the presence of an at least somewhat kindred spirit. Banter was flitting between the two with a distinct ease - while there was still hesitation in hoping jokes were understood and not misinterpreted, they had ... some kind of understanding or acceptance of each other, and such had spawned relatively quickly.

Edelweiss was grateful for the fact this mare, Valkyr, did not seem in the least bit as boring as the vast majority of creatures she met and was forced into talking to on her travels. She was mildly amused, to tell the truth, in the company of her new acquaintance, and the same could very rarely be said for anyone else she passed by. The warrior woman was a difficult soul to entertain - more often than not, incessant boredoms could be treated only by the thrills and spills of war and bloodshed. Macabre, perhaps, but she prided herself on only participating in conflict for the right reasons, fighting for the right side. The line between right and wrong, though, was becoming somewhat blurry as the number of battles to be had decreased and her boredom increased exponentially.

She had no response to offer to Valkyr's retortion - what was there to say? But the tricoloured mare seemed to hit the nail on the head when reacting to Edelweiss' namesake. She chuffed, nostrils flaring as she rolled her eyes in joking appreciation of the comment. "You understand - Edelweiss is not the name of a warrior, I know." and then Valkyr seemed to... try and excuse her parents for naming her such a pathetic thing?

The lady shook her head in mock disgust. "No, no. It's a ridiculous name. I loathe it." a wistful sigh escaped flared nostrils. "Your name is far more fitting to you," compliments were rare, and this.. wasn't a compliment in the most obvious of forms, to be honest, but it was something, coming from her.

VALKYR
the north

"Edelweiss can be the name of someone that can do whatever they want. It is certainly unique." Though perhaps it was better than how Valkyr had been named. Born to the strong of the north, she had been blessed to be a warrior, to follow the Valkyries of war, and her name was a play on that. She had had great hooves to fill there, let alone how massive the shadow was she had stood in with her regal parents. Swallowing the thought down, she instead pushed it from her mind. She'd proven herself there, and had also proven that she wanted to move elsewhere, to explore. Her parents had not held her back, though they had been somewhat disappointed she had shrugged the proverbial mantle of heir.

They could always have other children, and they had. She was not the only one.

The compliment put a small smile on dark lips, and her golden eyes hooded briefly, a back hoof lifting to press to the tip on the ground behind her. It was am action that caused a click to resound around them, and her head turned, facing upward to glance at what she could. "Do you believe in an afterlife, Edel?" With the other's discontent at the name, perhaps it was better to shift the topic. "In the North we -- they -- do. Where those that die in battle are swept off to the grand halls, or thrown in the deep depths to pay their dues. The lines are thin between the two.

Edelweiss......
words : ### || tag : Valkyr || notes : dis got deep
While she was growing to, well, not exactly dislike the mare in front of her, the next words that left her mouth Edelweiss certainly believed to be a load of 'tosh'. If she were not making a strained effort to remain somewhat polite she might've scoffed, but instead she returned with a disguisedly pointed reply. "Is not any name the name of someone who can do what they want?" what was a name to put a restriction on a character? The girl promptly realised she could be putting the only interesting promising friendship he had in jeopardy, though, and so remedied her remark with warm gratitude. "Thankyou, though." she nodded gently.

At least her own compliment seemed to have been well received, clued in by the smile on Valkyr's sooty face. The questions she then asked were curious. This place, 'The North', even curiouser. She was a well travelled woman but was yet to meet anyway from this realm Valkyr spoke of. Edelweiss wasn't... entirely sure how to answer the question. Had she even thought about it? Not really. The warrior mare was too caught up in her doing what was morally right to wonder where it was her slain victims would disappear to after the life left their bodies.

She shook her head accordingly. "I haven't really thought about it. An afterlife seems.... impractical," she mused, conjuring images of halls full of the dead and gone, overcrowded and gloomy as new connections were made in the wake of tragedy. "We die to make room for others, no? So what use is there in a place where they all go, does that not get crowded, too? Do they die again and go elsewhere, in an endless continuum?" the thought was almost amusing to her, in fact. Though on further thought, the idea that death was not actually the finite end of everything was rather reassuring. Caught between a rock and a hard place, the pink vixen added, "Though I can see the appeal in believing it. You have no questions of your home-realm's beliefs, not even now you have left?"
