the sentient marsh was not the most obvious of grounds for collecting ingredients, but the mage had overheard how he was forbidden to enter the lands he had heard named the viridian fields and the eternal woods. these were claimed by various royals, the details of whom he did not know, and their borders were closed to rogues such as he. he was not one to disrespect rules, and so he roamed the best of the open lands that he could find.

elysium seemed to be largely made up of coastal grounds - be that bays, lagoons or sandy islands - and these were not particularly suited to his needs. his internalized recipe book required some of the most odd and rare ingredients that were not likely to be foraged beneath a saltwater foam or in the crevices of sandstone cliffs. the marsh seemed to play home to a few of the components he required but he was by now considering sending casper, his maine coon, into the forbidden herdlands to snoop and collect herbs while going undetected.

his hooves sank into the claggy marsh grounds with a satisfying squelch every time he placed them down. jasper did such "placing" with a rhythm - front left, front right, front left, front left, back right, back left, front right - as he hummed a somewhat chilling tune to himself with closed eyes. his nostrils were flared as he smelt for the fragrance of the foliage he searched for, compensating for his voluntary lack of sight. along the ridge of his back balanced a number of bunches of coloured roots and leaves, arranged neatly in order of which he had picked up first. some were pretty, some looked simply like brown and dried weeds, though all were of equal importance. sitting on his rump, claws having found purchase in the thick fur of his winter coat, was his cat, coiled into a single shaggy heap with only his ears poking out of the top.

"bindleweed, gartleroot, blue grass, zinkwart," the man sang out in his gentle irish lilt, the rhythm of the words matching that of his previous humming. he missed a step and heard a splash, his left hind hoof having landed in a puddle a few inches deep. rather than casting annoyance back at the stagnant water, the enchanted stag just shook out his limb and glanced at the body of resting rainfall. "do you puddles have names?" he muttered, shifting his weight onto his right side as casper rearranged himself, disgruntled having nearly fallen off in the commotion. "you are horace," he grinned, setting off again and resuming his former pattern of steps.

jasper reached another puddle, glancing down at his reflection in the muddied green water and shaking his head gently. "silly," he chuckled, "silly, silly, silly," and he craned his neck downwards, stopping first to exhale over the puddle's surface and watch as the water rippled outwards. he then dipped his maw in, pushing through the few centimetres of grime and clenching his teeth around a small root at the bottom. he tugged the thing until it popped free of the marsh's grasp and twisted backwards to balance it on his spine with everything else. he smiled at it, and then continued on.

pour salt into the wound and let it bleed
It had been all but a dreary day when Caelian found the marshlands, a place he had not yet visited in his time at Elysium. It was not a very welcoming land, and the freckled man found himself hesitating to squash through the muddy terrain, dirtying his dark hooves. However, he faced his doubts and followed his sense of adventure, finding a fairly dry path to trail. The sun set quickly and the stars blinked their sleepy eyes open in the darkness, the moon showing her lovely, pale face. Fireflies buzzed low over the mushy foliage, reflexing off the murky, stagnant waters. Crickets chirped in the shadows, creating a choir of beautiful voices of different octaves. Frogs croaked in the waters, less common than the chirps, but adding to the song nonetheless. Greens took on a grey tone, and trees stood out stark in the silvery light. Caelian’s crystal blue eyes scanned the area as his hooves squelched with every step. He found the ugly landscape quite beautiful in the night, and his unknowingly tense muscles relaxed, a sigh escaping his velvet lips. A small smile crossed his face, and a spring appeared in his step.

Suddenly, a voice rang out over the loud silence. The dark stallion stopped suddenly, his ears perking, eyes squinting and watchful, and his head coming to an attentive position. At first, it was mumbles, too far away to hear. After a few steps more, Caelian found the darkness utter a question, do you puddles have names? This time, Caelian smiled at the amusing statement, finding the creature who had an accent a bit similar to the freckled steed’s. He was grey, with a white marking on his hind leg and a mane that seemed to glow with some kind of yellow light. Horns protruded from the man’s head, near the ears, and same together at another glowing point. Then another sentence, You are Horace. A name for the puddle.

Then, he set off again, and Caelian followed at a distance, his eyes straining in the dark. It was easy to see the bouncing fairylights, yet sometimes they looked like fireflies and confused the dark, freckled man. Eventually, the interesting steed stopped to look at his reflection, chuckled silly, silly, silly, silly, before bending down to pull something from the water with some struggle. He placed it on his back with a number of items Caelian hadn’t noticed before in the dark. Then, his dark hooves set off again, squishing through the mud in the night.

Caelian found all that he did strange, yet he was intrigued by the stallion. He had a sense of light-heartedness to him that drew in the young, freckled steed. Eventually, Caelian picked up his speed to come around the back of the other, coming near to his side and walking beside him. In this process, he announce a simple greeting, trying to find a light voice meant for kindness. This, however, was a slight bit difficult as he had only felt feelings of hatred, guilt, and overall disgust since he had arrived in Elysium. He had done nothing but snap at three or four equines. This time, though, he meant to bring out his gentle side, if it was still within him. ”Strange weather it’s been today.”

To say he was in his own world would not suffice for the man's state of mind. It was not his own world but rather his own entire dimension, oblivious to anything and everything going on around him.

The night was dark and growing darker still. The mage's path was lit only by the fairylights strung from his plaited mane and knotted tail, though their illumination was faint and golden. The same light radiated outwards from the conjoined tips of the curved horns between his ears, though this did not offer much to his way of seeing. The man was used to finding his way around with so little light, though. Light often made little difference anyway, for he was so inconsistent with his attention that he would bump into and trip over things whether he could see them or not. Luckily today's trodden path was void of most obstacles, though he continued to plunge his dark hooves into puddles as he made his way.

"Gertrude, Barry, Horatio," his Irish lilt muttered and chuckled as each puddle he passed through found itself with a new name. Casper continued to purr from his perch, offering a non-verbal suggestion to the list of names. The cat rolled forwards on his haunches, collecting together the bunch of herbs in his mouth and placing them in a pile that rested in the divot of Jasper's back. They were becoming too plentiful to rest safely in the line they'd been arranged in, but they had taken too long to find to risk losing.

Jasper cocked his head to the side, continuing on his way with his skull at a jaunted angle, and pushed his tongue to the roof of his mouth. He pressed air through it, pursing his lips and emitting the strangest of sputtering sounds. Casper let out an amused mew as his companion tried to replicate his purr, settling back down into his furry heap and coiling his tail around himself.

A man approached and began to speak to him, sporting an accent not dissimilar to his own. It took a moment for Jasper to break out of his internal song and dance, instigated only by the claws of his maine coon pushing just a little harder than necessary into the flesh of his rump. His ears quirked towards the stallion who now walked at his side, considerably taller, too, and a warm smile broke the confusion on his features.

He was not mad, far from it, merely consumed by the magic and mystery of his history and his genetics. Deep down he was a kind and intelligent man - it merely took a while for such character to come out.

"Strange..." he mused, eyes rolling upwards to look at the stars as they spoke to him from the blanket of their black sky. "Is not everything a little strange?"

”Strange indeed,” Caelian murmured, nearly echoing the man. He was consumed by his own thoughts of magic and chaos, and fell into memories of his use of it in past times. The warm smile that radiated off the other’s face seemed to bring him back, as well as the dance he walked and the small creature on his back. Caelian’s eyes watched the companion for a moment, before meeting the mismatched eyes of the equine once more. ”What are you doing, may I inquire? What will you use those for?” Caelian gestured lightly to the herbs on the dark one’s back with a tilt of his nose. He remembered nothing of herbology in his educated years at his old home, and knew only that they could cure some illnesses if used right, for that was what herbology was: the study of herbs for medical purposes.

So the freckled stallion proposed another question, ”Are you a healer?” It was not a question said like a child, but an educated guess of an adult. He found this steed intriguing, and wanted to learn more about the ways of this creature. Everything about him seemed to glow in a lovely way, from his smile to his speech and from his outward appearance. It was interesting to the drab and dull Caelian, with only purple horns and blue eyes to spruce up his dark coat.

it would not be fair to say the man was having a hard time in conversing with this new acquaintance. however, he was a little bemused. was the stranger mocking him? the fact their accents lay in the same realm of similarity perhaps did not help the feeling that he was being made fun of - but strangely it was not this that he cared about. the stallion was so carefree, so enveloped in the enchantments of his own head that he couldn't care less for those who had so little understanding of him they felt they must resort to teasing to find amusement in his company. of course, it was entirely likely that no mocking was taking place anyhow, only jasper didn't quite possess the concentration span to realise the numerous possibilities.

no, the magician was more bemused by the repetition of his own words. he was allowed to repeat his own words: that was fine, perfectly normal, even! how was he going to remember what he had said, what he had sung or shouted if he only completed the action once? his memory was not good enough for that, yet it was a necessity to maintain a constant internal dialogue of his every day words. otherwise, what purpose would his life have?

he turned his gaze back to the floor beneath him as he stepped, his rhythmic stepping still disturbed by the presence of another, and did not look at his company. it was not out of rudeness, no, but rather that the life on the swamped earth beneath him was so much more fascinating than a large black stallion could've been. he was a black stallion himself, after all - how much more interesting could this one be? he could already tell there was a distinct height difference and such was all he needed to know. the other man sought eye contact and jasper let him have it for a moment but not a second more. he asked of the purpose for his herbs and weeds in the pile on his back and jasper smiled, a wide grin that lit up his face more than the pale golden orbs hanging from his mane. there was no protocol of a magician's circle here, and while he ould not reveal many semantics of what it was he did, he was not forbidden from speaking of the themes and intentions in his work.

"Magic... magic," he sighed, the word wisping twice from his lips like a stream of silver smoke, "potions." he nodded once, then once more a few seconds later. even he did not know what potions he intended to make with the greens yet, and so he physically lacked the ability to tell the man any more. it was then that casper began to mew - a high pitched, pleading noise. not insistent or whiny but he was evidently irritated by the fact he was stuck perched on his companion's spine, unable to leap down to the ground for fear of dirtying his silky fur. in response, jasper stepped aside from the muddied path and knelt in the thick foliage that grew at the side - far drier but did not squelch quite so pleasantly beneath his hooves. he touched his nose to the floor, snorting as a thick weed tickled the bridge of his skull, and casper slunk down the slope of the equine's back, disappearing immediately in the thick grasses.

jasper returned to the swampy path and looked now at the horned stallion as he laughed, the sound resounding with warmth until it stopped quite abruptly and the stag shook his head. "no no no no," the whisper grew to an amused mumble with each repetition of the word, "magic is not healing, healing is not magic," he pressed his head a little closer to the stranger's, "magic is magic"

pour salt into the wound and let it bleed
So the glowing steed was using the herbs for magic… no potions, he had said with a satisfying nod, as if he agreed with his own words. Caelian found his velvety lips pulling up in the corners, and he traced his eyes back down to his hooves, watching the muddy landscape before him to make sure he did not trip.

Eventually, the other stopped for a moment and Caelian followed the cue, stopping a bit further up than him and looking over his freckled, grey back over at the cat that climbed down the neck of the magical other. The cat was silky and elegant, and a twinge of pain probed Caelian’s heart. His counterpart had been his sister, and he had blatantly left her without a second thought. He now pondered what she believed of him. What if she thought him dead? Caelian began playing with his lip nervously, chewing on it with the tip of his teeth.

Though he let it go when the other steed returned to the muddy path. His mouth was slightly open, and he closed it quickly before following the glowing stallion once more. To answer Caelian’s other question, the warlock gave a quick four “no’s.” His next sentence was something the freckled man had not heard before, or he had but had not heard it said the way it was. ”Magic is magic,” Caelian murmured to himself, a nearly inaudible noise. ”I used to pretend I could do magic, until I found an instructor who taught me. Mostly spells, but we did do potions every once in a while. Upon entering this land, my memories of the spells I used seemed to have escaped me. I am magicless, now, sadly.” The younger stallion swept his dark hooves through the muck of the swamp, his thoughts roaming.

The sculptor who had carved him had cared greatly for him and his well-being. He had been overly good to his two masterpieces, caring for them better than he even cared for himself. Caelian’s teachers had always been kind and generous to him, and Caelian’s sister, though a little careless of her brother’s feelings, had always been kind to him. All along, Caelian had felt like a misfit, like a mistake and as if he was just as evil and horrible as the haters had told him he was. He had left that island with a feeling of freedom, but now an overpowering amount of guilt rest on his heart.

He flicked his eyes to the happy stallion next to him, bouncing and smiling with a warm glow. Caelian dropped his head slightly, watching his hooves once more. ”I’ve done something terrible,” he said quietly.

Jasper stared on ahead as his cat weaved in and out of visibility through the tall grasses blocking his way. He took a moment to stop and drag a paw through a puddle, mentally naming it "Malcolm," with a soft smile as he watched the grotty water spatter the ground in front of him. His fetlocks were dripping and grimy by now but he paid no heed to the dirt - he would wash it off later when he returned to one of the cleaner of Elysium's territories.

In the corner of his eye he saw the other man chewing on his bottom lip, and he twisted his head in distinct concern. "I wouldn't do that," he warned, his voice low and yet still jovial, "You could turn into a mouse." did he believe it? Probably.

Then the man repeated Jasper's words but the bemusement at being mocked passed him by a second time. Instead he allowed his ears to swivel as the black creature spoke, curious as to his knowledge of the magical arts. It seemed he had experienced somewhat of the same past, though the man was not near as peculiar as Jasper himself came across. Unbeknownst to the stallion strung with fairylights, that was. He hung his head in mock sympathy as the words of sadness slipped from the stranger's lips, wondering what it would feel like to be stripped of enchantment entirely. He was unable to teach - his kind was not of academic inclination and though he wished he could find someway to transfer his talents to this other man he could not. "Magic has a funny way of returning when you least expect it," he spoke to the sky, the words relevant to the conversation though not necessarily directed fully at his acquaintance. It was not a rude address, not nearly, he just struggled mostly to focus on one thing alone. The stars were speaking to him, knots and jumbles of high pitched mutters and singing, and it would be ruder to ignore the creatures of celestial importance would it not?

He sighed a wistful sigh, imagining tendrils of copper swirling out in front of him and wrapping themselves around the trees and twines that lined his path. The stallion beside him dropped his head, though, and if Jasper's attention had been any more distracted he mightn't have heard the words that followed. He pushed his cranium towards the much taller stag and brushed his maw ever-so-gently over his neck, whispering with a voice aglow with ethereality, "Haven't we all?"
