and I'm straining to reach the light on the other side
His memories of fonder times were becoming few and far between. They were small recollections of moments when he could have been happy. It all seemed so brief in the heavy ache that encompassed him wholly these past few weeks. He had never had to mourn such a loss before. He had cut ties before and even then the sorrow that filled him was fleeting compared to this. Luthais found himself longing for places he could not return to. For memories and a time when his worries of the world around him were few.

Returning to the woods was a difficult task after Io’s death. He wanted nothing more than to keep going and to get as far from Elysium as he could. Returning had been difficult. The groove that he had beginning to think of as home had overgrown in his absence. The once tiny patch of roses he had tended to wilted without his magic to sustain them. The little life he had begun to build had crumbled around him in a matter of moments. Picking up the pieces as no easy task and even now Luthais wasn’t certain he was up for it.

So he sought out the only place where his memories remain untainted. It was a foolish thing to cling to during a time like this but it was the only time in his young life that he had felt such joy. The snow was shallow this time of year - almost non-existent had it not been for the nearby mountain. His steps crunched in the crisp white powder as he began to slow his pace. Off a slight ways he could see the borders of his woodland home.

A hesitant smile tugged at the corners of his lips. So much had changed. Even now as he looked towards the thick forested borders he could pick apart the differences from his memories. The trees - while still colossal - didn’t seem quite so endless. The thought of what lay within no longer puzzled him. Slowly his smile dropped as he stood staring at the place he tried so hard to call home. His heart ached and even here - in the place of his most prized memory - he couldn’t shake his inner turmoil.

The atmosphere is lonely and beautiful

The boy hadn't been to the mountains in a long while. If he hadn't been so overwhelmed with all the sudden losses he might have returned sooner. The snowy area held only memories of joy so far. A part of him was hesitant to return while so depressed. The pain of recent events might darken the place and then he would have nowhere to escape to. Mir pushed that hesitation away, finding it stupid and unnecessary. A place could only truly be tainted by darkness if that darkness occurred there. At least, that was what he hoped.
He could already feel his spirits lifting a bit despite the little amount of snow on the ground. Snowballs and laughter flashed through his mind as he stepped out from the trees. Violet eyes closed while his lungs took in a deep breath and held it. The cold burned but it helped wake him up out of the fog he had been in. Mir released the breath and started to walk, no idea where he was going. He left odd tracks in the snow as the tip of his right wing trailed along.
Mir's heart yearned for the wing to be okay again. He had no idea what flying felt like but it had to have some kind of release from the pain he was currently feeling on the ground, right? Being weightless in the air with nothing holding you down... It had to be better than what he was feeling right now.
He almost didn't notice the familiar figure with how distracting his thoughts were being. He would have run right into him but a smell stopped him. It was one that Mir hadn't been around in a while but wasn't something he would forget. It was hard to forget anything about someone you shared a soul with. If the boy had been in his right mind he might have stopped and actually said something, given Luthais some warning of his presence. Instead he kept moving until his muzzle was buried in the familiar scarf and he took a deep, shuddering breath.

The shifting sound of snow was almost inaudible. He would have tensed at the thought of someone else coming near had he not had some deeply rooted feeling that he knew who this was. Instead he found comfort in the approach. Turning his head slightly he chanced a fast glance at Mir before the other stallion was pressed against him. In a quick moment he felt the coiling distress that plagued him slip back into the corners of his mind. Instead he focused upon his winged companion and the warmth that bled through his scarf.

It had been too long since he had last seen Mir. There were moments where he managed to catch a quick glimpse of his friend but they always felt fleeting. Luthais released his own quivering breath as he shifted, slowly, to reach out and touch Mir’s brow. The swell of emotions that encompassed him were almost startling, half of them feelings he dared not touch just yet. He knew one thing for certain - he had missed his friend.

His touch was light and lasted for only a moment before he drew himself back. He may have craved the childlike giddiness but this - he could settle for this instead. He leaned the rest of his body closer as he pulled his head away to look out at their colossale forest home.

I wish the snow was a little stickier. I’d challenge you to a rematch,” he spoke quietly.

The atmosphere is lonely and beautiful

For a moment, just a moment, all the pain and despair from the past months vanished. The only thing in his head was this second in time with just Luthais. He hadn't realized he was shivering until his body was suddenly still. Warmth spread out from the point on his brow where the other stallion pressed his muzzle. It was somewhat disappointing when his friend drew back but Mir pulled his head away from the scarf.
Violet eyes peered into the same woods and he felt a tingle of memory of what he had felt long ago, as a colt. He didn't quite feel the same, too much had happened for him to feel entirely safe and at home in the trees, but there was some sense of belonging there. He wouldn't want to live anywhere else anyway. A small smile that almost reached his eyes lifted Mir's lips at the words. That long ago day in the snow was something he cherished deep in his heart.
"I would make it more fair this time and take off the necklace." The smile faded a bit after a moment, reality returning to him. Life had been so easy back then. He had only been worried about making friends and exploring as much as he could. It almost didn't seem like that colt had been the same equine.
Mir took a deep breath and let it out on a soft sigh. "How have you been handling... things..?" It was an awkward question to fill the silence and something he could already guess the answer to if Luthais was as wrecked as he was.
