The whirring of gears and whisper of steel scraping against steel rang out in the silence. From the fog he emerged, a metallic monstrosity... a steel-coated wraith. Despite the dim atmosphere, light glinted dully off scratched and dented plates that covered the creature's shoulders and haunches. Beneath the plating, wires and mechanisms whirred softly. The angular head lifted, a blue light emitting from the creature's eyes. It flickered against the drifting flakes that fell softly from polluted skies.

The material that fell like snow from above was something new. The creature knew about snow. That had been one of the weather patterns where it had last been. But this strange matter was not cold, nor was it truly white... Olfactory sensors within flared nostril-like cavities tested the air. The blue light from its eyes flickered again, numbers and letters scrolling across its vision as its processors gathered information.

Ash. Powdery residue that remains after a substance is burned. Sample shows traces of plant and animal biomass.

The words scrolled, a light, feminine robotic voice in his head reading them aloud. Visual sensors indicated that there was no fire, nor any sign of recent burning, in the near vicinity. That was incongruous with the readings.

There was so much to learn about the world it seemed.

The creature known as Strider kept moving. Metal hooves carved deep holes wherever he stepped, the weight of his body displacing much more than a flesh-and-blood equine of the same size. Beneath his armored hide, cords of wire muscle stretched and electricity crackled. His internal navigation was no use in this place, so far from the mountains where he had come from. Where he presumed that he had existed for some time, based upon the wear and tear to his chassis. Internal logs said that he had last undergone major repairs approximately fifteen-hundred days ago, so he could extrapolate that he was at least that old, but truly he knew little else.

The light that emitted from his optics cut through the fog before him, two beams of light refracting off of a million tiny particles in the air. Delicate, cone-shaped auditory sensors atop his head swiveled towards a noise far in the distance. Without thought, Strider headed in the direction of the sound.

This land was just... ew. There was ash everywhere. Like literally everywhere. Strangely enough, in all her time in Elysium, Benna had not been here. But apparently, this was where one went to recruit new herd members. And, as newly appointed Empress, Benna supposed she ought to suck it up and go recruit. The Heretics needed more fighters - well, healers and others would be good too, but fighters definitely. As far as she knew they had few Knights. If Benna really wanted to take Elysium by storm, she would need a solid army at her back. And this was the best place to start, was it not?

There was a whirring sound, grating against her ears and breaking the otherwise silence of the monochrome land. Benna paused - was that normal? Did this land normally make grunts and scrapes and whatever elses? It was almost like metal grinding against metal, but as far as Benna had seen there was no metal in this land.

But then she saw it. She metallic hide of an equine creature, only it was clear the creature was not like her in any way. For one, she could not distinguish a gender from the being. Him? Her? She settled on they, that seemed best.

Secondly, they were made of only metal. She could see that now as she moved closer, eyes wide not out of fear - what even is fear? - but pure astonishment. The more she looked, the more she saw of this creature and the more she liked them. Their metallic hide was scratched and dented, movements were far more fluid that she would have expected and their eyes seemed to hold more intelligence than one would expect of an inanimate object. This creature, however, was most definitely not an inanimate object.

Their head had snapped towards her when she stood an a branch, the brittle bark cracking underneath her hoof. Her jaw forgot how to work and I'm pretty sure Benna forgot to breathe for a moment under that gaze.

"Oh my Gods," she started, "You're incredible."

Great Benna, just great. Perfect way to start off the recruitment process. The dragon gave her head a little shake before recovering her adult senses.

"Forgive me, it's just that I haven't seen anyone as unique as you. I am Benna, Empress of the Heretics. May I ask your name?"

There, that ought to cover it.

The creature's sensors had picked up on another life-form, its blue gaze shining upon the slender woman whose face stood out stark white against the grays of the world around them. Auditory sensors atop the metallic man's head rotated towards the mare, catching easily the exclamation that fell from her lips. Its head tilted with a soft whir, in that universal look of curiosity, as she seemed to have some sort of malfunction before her words came again. The steel creature did not quite understand her meaning, though even in his robotic mind he could process that the two of them were fundamentally different. This woman, and it was certain from the readings that were feeding across his visual sensors that this was a female, was completely made of flesh save for a few metallic adornments that glinted from various spots on her body. He had not encountered such a large flesh-creature before... only small woodland animals that his internal database categorized as rabbits, foxes, or squirrels.

He processed her words carefully, hoping that he parsed them correctly before speaking.  From deep within the creature a tinny, robotic voice crackled to life like an old vinyl record being played.

"Hello Benna Empress of the Heretics. Sensors indicate you are... unique as well."

The words were delivered with no inflection, which to most would sound almost sarcastic in its delivery. The thing meant no disrespect, he simply had not had occasion to speak with many other creatures to this point in his existence. Her query, though, confused him. Name? He did not have a name... Quickly he accessed his internal servers, searching for the answer to what she asked. Haltingly, as if unsure of himself, he spoke aloud what his database returned.

"HZD Acquisition Class Machine 7874347 Codename: Strider."

The creature did not know what these words meant, but according to the article that now displayed within his blue gaze it was what he was called. Strider. That was as close to a name as he could find.

"Benna Empress of the Heretics, query: What is our location?"

The creature asked the question strangely, but again he had not yet learned the intricacies of speech. His vocabulary was vast, but it would take time for the steel being to grasp syntax.

Being on the lookout was all the stallion seemed to know anymore. Constantly in search of new additions to his beloved herd, the black and blue stag was strangely changed. For the better, though, one might find themselves insisting at the very least.

He trekked through the claiming grounds, endlessly familiar with it by now, eyes narrowed and scanning for helpless souls who stood alone and in need of company. Today, Gotham had no such luck. There was, however, in the distance the silhouette of a peculiar thing he thought looked somewhat familiar. In curiosity and curiosity alone, the Crucis King stalked closer to the familiar shape and the equine who accompanied it. The shape was equine and yet somehow not. Somehow it echoed words of a mechanical nature, and the glint that reflected from its back only served to prove the man's suspicions right. He had met this creature once before, in the snow on the peaks of Elysium's own Lunar Mountains, and remembered the conversation as having been distinctly strange. Regardless, dark beast continued to close the distance between himself and the conversing pair, ears twitching towards the already initiated conversation as he traveled at a brisk pace.

The mare who accompanied the machine he realised now was the newly crowned Heretic Empress, a woman he was yet to meet. Perhaps here was not the best spot for an impromptu meeting, but better here than nowhere. He dipped his head a few inches lower to the dusty ground as he drew nearer to the new Queen, but refused to regard her first out of respect to his own policy. She was of the same "caliber" as he, so to speak. If she were to be offended by his greeting the rogue first, sobeit. It was no secret that Heretic and Crucis had far from a jovial history, and it was not within the King's most forefront intentions to rectify the bad blood between the two.

He looked upon the strange being with a gaze that held only the slightest flicker of warmth. He wasn't entirely sure how much emotion the creature could detect, anyhow. "Good to meet you again, Strider," he couldn't recall if names had been swapped when he had first met the equine... thing, but had been lucky enough to catch it being spoken as he approached. "Benna," he had heard the Empress' title on the wind as news of her rise to the throne whispered through Elysium. His sight, as he directed it towards her, was not scathing but far from warm. Gotham City was unaware whether she was even here to drag this unsuspecting soul back to the atrocities of the herd she ruled, but he didn't give a damn.

"Are you both well?" unfortunately, the expectation of a King's niceties overruled his desire to chew through the Heretic Queen's ears.

The voice that came from the metal equine was strange. It was tinny, as if coming from inside a metal drum. The words were spoken with little change of tone, but still. They were appreciated despite what could have been a sarcastic tone. When you're a Benna, sarcasm is something that can be ignored at will.

Then they went on to answer her question, but with a long list of letters, words and numbers that meant absolutely nothing to Benna at all. Well, apart from Codename: Strider. That, at least, meant something.

"Thank you, Strider," she said, taking his words as a compliment even if they were not meant to be so. The way they spoke was strange. Query? What was that? Her head tilted to the side, white ears twitching slightly as they processed the words, latching on instead to what she could understand.

"We are in the Claiming Grounds," she responded, gesturing to the ashen trees around them with her pale skinned nose.

Then a large stallion appeared, his coat dark blue and spotted with glowing disks. Although Benna did not know who he was, there was the lingering scent of Crucis on him. She would recognise that anywhere, having ventured into the woodlands herself on multiple occasions.

This man seemed to be acquainted with Strider already, but what shocked her most was that he already knew who Benna was. Had the man been listening when she introduced herself? She considered him for a moment. Was it possible this man was the Gotham City who ruled over the Eternal Wood?

She was utterly oblivious to whatever spiteful feelings this man may have held towards the Heretics and Benna herself, and simply continued the conversation with the same politeness she always did.

"I am well, thank you," she narrowed her eyes, scrutinizing the man before her, "Would you, by any chance, happen to be Gotham City, the King of Crucis?"

The auditory radar atop the metal man's skull rotated towards the sounds of another approaching. As he turned his head to face the newcomer, Strider recognized the man. They had met not long ago, in the mountains to the North of this place... this place Benna Emperess of Heretic called the Claiming Grounds. A glint of dim light shone off of the metal carapace of his skull as he nodded to the other male... the one Benna correctly identified as Gotham City. His voice crackled into the air as he greeted the man.

"Hello Gotham City. I am...well."

He hesitated a moment within his answer, testing the strangeness of the phrase. He had learned a little about the way these organic equines spoke during that conversation with Gotham, but it still felt foreign to his programming. Before he might have said that all systems were functioning at full capacity... He had found, however, that such terminology was often lost on creatures made of flesh and bone.

Though the strange metal newcomer could not quite understand it, he could sense the tension in the air between the two who had found him here. Considering the information that he was gathering through their conversation, he could only make one conclusion. The female, Benna, was called Emperess of Heretic but she called Gotham City the King of Crucis... As a myriad of definitions and information passed through the cortex of his mind, Strider concluded that Heretic and Crucis must be opposing herds. And these were their two leaders. In surprise, he looked to Gotham City.

"Gotham City, you did not mention during our last encounter that you were a King."

The words were delivered in his usual monotone, not an accusation but merely a statement of fact. Strider was learning much from these strangers... so much new information was flowing into his processors. It was like an entirely new world had opened up to the steel monster.

They were a peculiar threesome of creatures, that was something to be noted upon. A robot, a glowing giant and a mare who was not small but beside the two stallions looked quite miniscule. Not odd at all - infact, entirely normal. Obviously.

The King could not help but be a little startled by how politely the Heretic Empress received him. Perhaps she was oblivious as he had been previously to the bad blood between their herds. Though, even in his ignorance he had held a vendetta against the Heretics purely for the crimes he had heard they committed against the innocents of Elysium. That said, Crucis wasn't known for wreaking havoc and so if she did not know of the happenings between their kingdoms in years prior to this one, she would presumably have no reason to loathe the people of the Eternal Wood. Despite the apparent general Heretic hatred of everyone that is not one of them, that is.

Regardless of her obliviousness, Gotham was not here to fight or find hostility. He was here primarily to greet Strider and meeting Benna was a secondary priority. If he could gain anything from his unintentional conversation with her, all the better. He nodded his head at the mare's confession of wellbeing, and then again as she questioned his title. "That would be me," he approved, not bothering to ask how she had figured it out. Equines in these lands had their various ways of pinning down an unknown face's identity. Smells, voices, mere rumours. It could've been anything, and he wasn't likely to find himself amused by the continuation of small talk. Strider seemed less sure of his answer to the question but the black beast assumed this to be because of his robotic nature before anything else. There was, after all, a slight conversational disparity apparently between the monotonous man and those he spoke with, and Gotham would do well not to encourage potential confusion.

So he nodded, too, at Strider's wellbeing and continued to listen politely. Apparently it had skipped his tongue to mention his royalty when he had first met the robot. Well, it wasn't exactly something he went shouting about from the rooftops (Elysium? What rooftops?) and as he seemed to recall he had only recently been crowned when their first conversation took place. He dipped his head but an inch or so closer to the creature's face, "Forgive me, Strider." he figured the emotionless voice lended to the sentence being a statement rather than a confession of hurt or irritation. He had not meant to omit information and apparently Strider had understood that, anyway. "The need simply didn't seem to arise. But, yes," he nodded, "I rule the Eternal Woods, and have for a while now." almost reluctantly, though it failed to show on his stony expression, Gotham turned to Benna.

"And how has royalty been treating you, Benna?" did he really care for the dastardly mare's life on the tainted Heretic throne? No. But he had to show a little humility now and again - particularly if he fancied any chance of wooing the rogue between them back to his lands. As of now he wasn't even sure Strider was looking for a place to call home, and he would respect that unless an obvious opportunity for self-promotion presented itself.

A mist of tension flowed through the air, but skimmed right over the metal plating of the machine man. The intricacies of the inter-herd politics were completely lost on the strange newcomer, who had only barely grasped through cognitive reasoning that Heretic and Crucis were the names of his two companion's respective herds. He could not even imagine the depth of history that lay between the two leaders.

For a moment after Gotham's reply, Strider paused and digested the phrase. His angular, steel-plated head tilted slightly to the side as he looked upon the fleshy male, blue optics gleaming in the dim light.

"That logic is sound. I accept it."

What the beast meant was that in truth, there was nothing to forgive. Strider was not upset that Gotham had not imparted this information upon their prior meaning. No, the machine was merely gathering data and was simply attempting to place it accurately within the catalog of his mind.

He watched the exchange between Benna and Gotham with curiosity, radar-like auditory sensors atop his head rotating with little whirs to better grasp the conversation. After a time, he spoke up once more.

"Benna and Gotham City, query: What are Heretic and Crucis?"

Again, the monster's words did not quite convey his actual question. He had extrapolated what they were... But what he truly requested of them was more information about the two herds. After all, he had somehow found his way into this land. He felt as though he should understand as much as he could about this strange world that would become his home.
